I helped this young family to create some interest with plants in their garden and soften the edges of their patio.  Having just extended their patio to create a more useable space, they wanted to add some colour to their garden.  We decided to create 2 curved borders to create a space for planting and a herb bed right next to the patio.

Their sandy soil was perfect for the mediteranean feel they wanted to develop and I sourced a standard Olive Tree to integrate the new beds with 2 existing trees they had.  We underplanted these with a mixture of shrubs, grasses and perennials and planted climbers to cover the fences and bring vertical interest.

I worked with the Husband of the house to layout the plants and to move some exisiting shrubs.  I also sourced some climbers for the rest of the garden to cover the boundary fences.

I developed a planting scheme for a courtyard garden and green wall with the team at SPACE+MATTER who had been appointed to fully refurbish a typical Victorian mews house in a conservation area in Hampstead, London.

The garden was landscaped and transformed into a tranquil and spacious outdoor area that can be used for entertaining as well as providing a safe children’s play area flowing directly from the house. Softened with green planting inspired by the owner’s upbringing in Australia.  I used ferns, grasses and Fatsia Japonica in a ticky shady courtyard to bring texture and interst all year and screens of Star Jasmine to cover the walls.

Further outdoor space was created by the addition of a large, private roof terrace at first floor level overlooking the garden onwhich we installed a green wall system, planting it with drought tolerant ferns, grasses and Heucheras, complementing the colours in the floor tiles.

This garden backs onto woodland and not only was its heavy clay proving challenging when selecting plants but its lack of structure made it feel ‘samey’ and vague.

I reshaped the lawn and beds to create a more flowing space and spots for seating to make the most of the sun in the evening and morning.  We were also able to use the owner’s beautiful statues and garden accessories to create focal points which drew the eye (and the the feet) into and through the garden.

Planting plans for 2 distinct areas of planting were connected by repetition of colour to make the areas link together seamlessly using new plants and by splitting and moving existing perennials and shrubs.

This small courtyard garden was created to showcase the owners stunning collection of Acers and shrubs and to give it’s owner somewhere peaceful to sit and enjoy the sun and her favourite plants.

I used simple shapes to make the space feel bigger than it actually is.  A patio area made the most of the sunny aspect and allowed enough space for seating, posts and a water feature.  A path on the diagonal enabled access to the garage and using sandstone for the hard landscaping brought consistency and harmony.
